RENPHO Bluetooth Body Fat Scale Review

RENPHO Bluetooth Body Fat Scale

After my Fitbit and Withings scale fell apart last August, the search for a new set started. After researching numerous options, I settled on the RENPHO body fat scale for four reasons:

  1. Cost
  2. The number of measurements – 13
  3. Connection to the Fitbit AP
  4. Bluetooth connection

When I purchased this scale, it was under $30. I thought it was worth a chance since the reviews were numerous and mostly positive.

For the first five months of testing, this scale has delivered as advertised. This includes the connection to the Fitbit AP. See our Fitbit Charge 3 review. My Withings scale and RHENPO scale are close with weight and body fat.

Body Measurements

The following text in italics is directly from the AP.

Weight

The scale can go to 396 lbs. and has an overload warning. It measures to tenths of a pound. Here is what is looks like on the AP.

RENPHO Body Fat Scale Review BMI

Body Fat

The total mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100. Thanks Wikipedia.

RENPHO Body Fat Scale Review Body Fat

Fat-free Body Weight

I found this on-line for fat free body weight from here.

“Lean body mass differs from fat-free mass. Since there is some essential fat in the marrow of your bones and internal organs, the lean body mass includes a small percentage of essential fat. However, with the two-component model of body composition, these sources of essential fat are estimated and subtracted from total body weight to obtain the fat-free mass.”

Subcutaneous Fat & Visceral Fat

According to health.harvard:

“In most people, about 90% of body fat is subcutaneous, the kind that lies in a layer just beneath the skin. If you poke your belly, the fat that feels soft is subcutaneous fat. The remaining 10% — called visceral or intra-abdominal fat — lies out of reach, beneath the firm abdominal wall. It’s found in the spaces surrounding the liver, intestines, and other organs. It’s also stored in the omentum, an apron-like flap of tissue that lies under the belly muscles and blankets the intestines. The omentum gets harder and thicker as it fills with fat.”

Body Water

Water weight, which it includes the blood, lymph, extracellular fluid, etc.

Skeletal Muscle

The ratio of muscle involved in the mechanical system of our limbs and other parts of the body.

Muscle Mass

The total muscle weight, including skeletal muscle, cardiac, and smooth muscle.

Bone Mass

Bone tissue consists of of bone minerals (calcium, phosphorus, etc.) and bone matrix (collagen fiber, ground substance, inorganic salt, etc.) per unit volume.

Protein

Protein plays a vital role in the body, as it builds and maintains muscles, organs, and other tissue.

BMR

Basal Metabolic Rate. In an inactive state, this is the minimum necessary energy needed.

Metabolic Age

Ideal physical body age is 2/3 of the actual age.

About the Battery

This scale uses 3 AAA batteries which are still working from January of 2019. After daily use they are still working as of June 22nd. There is also a model RENPHO offers that recharges.

Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

After having a Wi-Fi scale, which sometimes had connectivity issues, I chose a Bluetooth option figuring the connection issues would be less. So far, so good.

Issues

The black surface does retain some smudging. I haven’t had a scale that doesn’t, so that is no surprise. The scale also comes in white and maybe this color hide smudges better. The feet are rubber but will still slide on vinyl flooring.

Science

Bio-Impedance Analysis is the science for the measurements. My research indicates this science has some criticisms on accuracy. For my use, which is to lose a few pounds and get an idea of my BMI, a little inaccuracy is OK. More important are the trends. So, if the scale is off but consistent, the trend line will be helpful to most users.

How do I connect to Fitbit App?

In order to get the data to sync to Fitbit the RENPHO Bluetooth Body Fat Scale APP needs to be opened, then the Fitbit AP will sync. Not all information transfers to the Fitbit. What does transfer is body weight, body fat and BMI. The remaining 10 measurements must be accessed via the RENPHO Ap. Viewing the display is favorable. Recommended ranges show in graph form.

The AP works smoothly and connects via Bluetooth to the scale when in proximity. The scale does store the data and syncs historical data when connected.

Here are RENPHO’s Standard Steps:

Restart your phone and ensure you are logged in to both the RENPHO and Fitbit apps. Then try measuring again.

  1. In the RENPHO app, go to “Settings”, select ‘Fitbit’.
  2. Enable Fitbit, login to your Fitbit account.
  3. Select ‘Allow’ to access Fitbit App.
  4. After connection, all the data will sync to your Fitbit App. You can view your measurements on both the app and web.

If the standard steps steps do not work, try reinstalling both the RENPHO App and Fitbit app.

For Android

Go to your Android phone’s central control panel under Setting > Application > Renpho > uninstall. If you just delete the shortcut on your desktop, that doesn’t actually delete the app.

For iPhone

When you delete the RENPHO app, a message may appear saying “You have data from “RENPHO” in your Health data.” -> DO NOT select “Delete”.

If message says “Deleting this app will also delete its data” -> Select “Delete”.

After reinstalling, allow all permissions from the apps when prompted.

Ensure you are the main user. Sync only one RENPHO app to one Fitbit account.

Fitbit may have restrictions allowing minors to use it. Each region has its own rules.

NOTE:

1. If you logout of the RENPHO app, the data will not sync with Fitbit.

2. Once you attempt all of the above steps, measure again to see if the data syncs with Fitbit.

Can I use this smart scale without connecting to an app?

Without the app, the scale only displays weight measurements, and you wouldn’t have access to body composition information such as body fat, body water, skeletal muscle. Using the app also means that you keep a record of your body data every time you step on the scale. With the app, data can be stored in a cloud server so that it is available to you even as you use other mobile devices.

The app that works with this scale is called RENPHO. Download it for free from the iOS App Store or GooglePlay. Within the app, you can create multiple users to help you maintain records for each family member. The cloud storage makes viewing all these records very convenient.

Why does the app need my height, age, and other private information when I first sign in? Will this be kept private?

The BIA bioelectric measuring technique requires 3 pieces of information: height, age and gender. With this data, the scale calculates your fat percentage by combining the provided data plus the body impedance measurement picked up by the scale. Without this data, you can only get basic weight measurements, and the smart scale will not be able to give you a complete analysis.

We will keep your personal information private. The information is only used for the fat percentage algorithm application and no other purposes.

What should I do if the scale is not displaying the data, or if it displays something unusual?

There are several possibilities:

RENPHO Scale Not Displaying Data

1) LED not displaying: Check that the battery still has power by reinstalling the battery. If the LED display still does not work, try putting in a new battery.

2) LED displays LO (LOW BATTERY): Check to see that the battery is correctly installed, and make sure the battery still has power. Reinstall the battery, and if the LO display still appears, replace the battery with a new one.

3) LED displays ERR (ERROR): The scale sensor may have been overloaded or even damaged. Avoid exceeding measurements of 440 lbs (180 kg) when using this scale.

How do I switch between units (i.e., lb and kg) on the scale display?

Switch between units in the Settings menu in your app. After choosing the unit you want, reconnect the app to the scale by stepping on the scale. The latest weight unit configuration will be updated.

Why do I need to turn on GPS for Android phones?

Android phones 6.0+ requires enabling location in order to use Bluetooth. The Android operating system requires it to search and sync with Bluetooth devices.

Ref: https://source.android.com/devices/bluetooth/ble

Caution: BLE scanning requires your permission to enable location because BLE scanning identifies objects that could be used for geolocation. Turning off location will disable Bluetooth.

How is a proper measurement obtained?

1) Open the app.

RENPHO Body Fat Scale Proper Measurement

2) To measure, remove any shoes and socks, and make sure both feet are on the electrode plates on either side. Try not to move too much during measurement.

RENPHO Body Fat Scale Proper Measurement

3) The scale first measures weight, then fat and other components. When obtaining measurement, scale and app responses are as follows:

  1. A weight of 50.00 kg will flash as “50.00 kg” on the display 2 to 3 times. A “0” will then appear, moving left to right a few times until the final display, “50.00 kg,” appears and remains on screen for about 5 seconds before shutting off.
  2. In the app, the measured weight will flash until measurement is complete. A sound will also indicate its completion, and all body data will appear. (Sound settings can be changed in the Settings menu.)

4) To obtain another measurement, wait a few seconds after the current LED display disappears. If you step back onto the scale too quickly, the scale may not register.

How exactly is my body fat being measured?

-RENPHO Body Fat Scale uses a measurement method known as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA).

-A small current is sent through your body, via your feet and legs. This current flows easily through the lean muscular tissue which has a high fluid content, but not easily through fat which has a lower fluid content. In this way, the bio-impedance (i.e. resistance to the current) is used to estimate body fat and body water.

-The electrical current is small and may not be felt. Contact with the body is made via metal electrodes on the platform of the scale.

RENPHO scales use bio-electrical impedance analysis(BIA) technology to offer you the data.

And the data obtained by BIA bioelectric measurement is closely related to the following parameters: body impedance coefficient/height/weight/age/gender.

Currently there are several popular methods other than BIA for measuring fat percentage. The two methods widely considered the “gold standard” are weighing in water and DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorption method). However, even these two methods also often present discrepancies. That’s because fat is a special and complex tissue in the human body. It includes subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, and others, and is widely present in various parts of the body.

The best thing that users can do is not be concerned about difference of values between different devices, but rather focus on relative changes of value measured by the same device over long periods of time.

Sticking with the same assessment system will likely yield a better overall picture of a person’s health status. Again, we must stress that relative changes of value is more meaningful than absolute value of a single measurement.

What can I do to get the best measurements and avoid scale errors?

Place the scale on a hard/ flat surface and step on the scale with bare feet. The display will then turn on.

Tips:

– Check your profile information (gender, age and height). Make sure your information is accurate.

– Ensure your scale is on a hard/flat surface. Some surfaces seem flat but are actually not. Try a few different hard surfaces.

– Check the legs of the scale before you measure. If not balanced, the data won’t be accurate.

– Make sure that ‘CAL’ and ’0.0’ are shown on the display before each use.

– Step on with bare feet, with each foot touching both the top and bottom electrode.

– Stand on the scale firmly. Do not shake your body when weighing.

– Take your measurements at the same time each day to ensure the most accurate results.

If the scale isn’t detecting body fat and other data:

First, reboot the scale. If you have the rechargeable model, press the “Reset” button at the back of scale for 5 seconds. For the model using AAA batteries, take one battery out for 5 seconds and put it back in.

  1. Make sure your feet are bare.
  2. Stand firmly on the scale with feet apart, facing the LED digital display.
  3. Wait about 15s for the weighing process to finish.
  4. Try applying moisturizer to your feet and measure again.
  5. Ask another person to step on the scale and see if the body fat data works for them.

Why is my fat percentage data different from the data from other scales? Why are fat percentage measurements generally inconsistent? How does long term observation help in obtaining accurate fat percentage measurements?

Fat is a special and complex tissue in the human body. It includes subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, and others, and is widely present in various parts of the body. Currently there are several popular methods for measuring fat percentage: DEXA, BIA, etc. Different measurement methods have their own unique algorithms and produce different results. So far, methods for weighing in water and DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorption method) are called the “gold standard.” However, repeat test results with these gold standards also present discrepancies. Therefore, with body component analyses, no instrument can give absolute and correct answers. Household body fat scale manufacturers mostly use the BIA measurement method, but results are also different due to different algorithms. The best thing that users can do is not be concerned about difference of values between different devices, but rather focus on relative changes of value measured by the same device over long periods of time.

Sticking with the same assessment system will likely yield a better overall picture of a person’s health status. Again, we must stress that relative changes of value is more meaningful than absolute value of a single measurement.

back to menu ↑

Why would the sum be more than 100% when all measured components are added up?

In the chemical structure of the human body, the main components include fat tissue, water, protein, and inorganic tissue. Fat tissue is mainly comprised of fat and water, wherein water accounts for about 25% of total fat tissue. Muscle tissue is mainly comprised of protein and water, wherein water accounts for about 70% of total muscle tissue.

This body fat scale measures contents of fat tissue, muscle tissue, water, bone, and other major tissues in the human body. Due to various tissues containing certain proportions of water, the sum exceeds 100% when all the measured components are added up.

Can’t Open Normally the Solution of Bluetooth

Please try the below steps:

  1. Reset the scale:

If you are using the model with removable batteries, you can reset the scale by taking out one battery for 5 seconds and putting it back in.

If you are using the rechargeable model, press the reset button on the back of the scale for 5 seconds.

  1. Reset the Bluetooth connection

Ensure Bluetooth and GPS(Android only ) are enabled on your phone > Open the RENPHO app > Under the “Measurements” section, select the top right “+” > Select “Device Management” > Find the model number that begins with “ES” and slide it left to forget the device > Tap the”+” on the top right to enter pairing mode > Step one foot on the scale surface to wake it up > After a few seconds of loading, the scale model number will appear (begins with “ES”), tap it > Step on the scale again to complete the pairing.

Tips:

– Download the correct RENPHO app which is free at the App Store and Google Play.

– RENPHO App works with Bluetooth 4.0 and supports Android 4.3 and IOS 8.0 or above.

– If the device and phone are in pairing mode but your phone does not detect the scale after several seconds, try resetting the scale by either replacing the AAA batteries or holding the reset button. After resetting, try pairing again.

– For Android, it’s possible that previously attempting to connect the scale could prevent a new connection. Check your Android phone’s central control panel under “settings” > Select “paired device” > Select “QN-Scale” and forget the device .

– Please try to use smart phone own network (cellular network) to login again, do not use WIFI.

– Two ways to confirm that the scale is connected to your phone:

  1. Bluetooth icon appears in the APP in the main display.
  2. The weight displayed in the APP will exactly match the weight displayed on the scale’s LED screen in real time.

If none of the above steps resolves your connectivity issues, try the “Bluetooth anomaly detection” function:

  1. Open the RENPHO app.
  2. Go to “My Account”and select “Settings”.
  3. Select“Bluetooth anomaly detection”and follow up the instructions.
  4. Submit the abnormality report.
  5. Share your app account to support team.(support@renpho.com)

We will pass your issue to our tech team to further diagnose the problem.

I am using the Bluetooth version of the scale. Is it necessary for the app to be on whenever I use the scale?

You do not have to have the app on while you use the scale. Data will be stored in the scale each time you measure, for up to 20 instances of data. The next time you open the app and the connection is reestablished, all the previous data per corresponding member will be uploaded to the app. If there is a difference of about 6 lb (3 kg) or more, or if there are significant changes in the data over a short period of time, the app will allow manual allocation of each data instance to the correct member. This helps avoid mistakes in the automation. You are also allowed to delete data that doesn’t belong to any of the members.
